Mental Health in North York
With a population just under 700,000 it comes as no surprise that over 57% of North York's population was not born there. North York is an ever growing city based majorly on diversity and embracing differences, yet it is not excluded in the trend of bullying. According to a recent article, 1 in 3 Canadian children have been bullied recently.2 The age of children in which bullying is most prevalent is 11-15 between 7th and 9th grade.3 The effects of bullying can be long lasting for not only the child being bullied but the bully themselves, which makes it a serious problem. If you or someone you know is being bullied, the 24 hour kids hotline can be reached at 1-800-668-6868.
Current Initiatives
Stop a Bully is a Canadian initiative reaching throughout the country, including North York, to end bullying. It is a website designed to allow students, parents, teachers and bystanders to report acts of bullying immediately and anonymously to the police through the website and allow actions to be taken directly after. This allows students to feel safe at school and enjoy their experiences without the effects of bullying. The website can also be used as an educational tool to teach kids and parents about the types of bullying and the many effects it can have on the child being bullied.4 If you would like to get involved, you can send your school a join request if it is not already on the members list or donate to the cause through their website, stopabully.ca.
